The Nine Hierophants are important figures within The Universe of the Nine Roads and central characters in my novel-in-progress. Each Hierophant is the most skilled wizard of his/her/its Road, and possesses a connection to that Road stronger than anyone else in the world. Their magical abilities are stronger and more extensive than a typical wizard’s, the power of their office and the special bond they share with their Road allowing them to perform feats out of reach for most mages.
The Hierophants are charged with extolling the virtues and significance of their Road, but also with maintaining balance among all the Roads. They also exist to teach others about their Road and the concepts it contains, revealing to others its truth and sacredness.
I am still developing the “mechanics” of the Hierophants; how they are chosen, how the office is passed on, things of that nature. As with the Onphar Nine, I’ve focused on creating the currently relevant characters. The lineup of the Hierophants at the time of The Dawn Prism, excluding Zerieth who has his own entry, runs thus.
Ovolen, the Grey Hierophant: A mysterious entity, likely of Faerie-kind, Ovolen is difficult to locate, pin down, or understand. Even its gender is uncertain.
Voilirian, the Black Hierophant: A human mystic who lives as a hermit atop a high mountain contemplating emptiness and teaching those who seek her out focus and calm.
Shivatya, the Red Hierophant: A human revolutionary and freedom-fighter, Shivatya can usually be found overthrowing repressive governments with fire and force.
Edina Nefay, the Orange Hierophant: A master storyteller and entertainer, Edina is a human woman who moves from city to city , both telling and showing her audiences the tales of old, reminding people that sometimes lies are used to tell the truth.
Acarat, the Yellow Hierophant: Acarat hasn’t been seen or heard from in a century. No one knows where to find him and given his mastery of spatial magic, he could be anywhere.
Gefren Olros, the Green Hierophant: A towering but peaceful hill-troll, Gefren spends most of his time in a sacred grove contemplating the cycles of birth, growth, death and decay.
Oshual, the Blue Hierophant: One of the oldest of the current Hierophants, Oshual is a human bard who wanders the length and breadth of the world, spreading song and exploring the mysteries of the depths and heights wherever he goes.
Ophiryon, the Purple Hierophant: An Argran enchanter and adviser to kings, Ophiryon is charming, personable and capable of swaying armies with his charisma.
