The Purple Road (which should be “The Violet Road” for spectral accuracy, but that name just doesn’t sound right to me) is command, leadership, domination, charisma, connections, bonds and ties, summoning, rulership, charm, and strength through unified diversity. From tyranny to teamwork, from seduction to summoning the Purple Road is about bonds, and all the things that lie between one being and another.
Purple magic involves command of other beings, augmenting the strengths of others and perceiving and manipulating the ties and connections between things and especially people. A Purple Road mage can cast a geas on a person, forcing them to follow or refrain from a course of action or compelling them to follow the wizard’s demands, summon up beings from his own or other worlds, or charm and beguile the unwary. Purple spells can perform object-reading, tracking someone down by tracing their connection to a possession, augment a being’s existing strengths, perceive the emotional bonds between people, cow and intimidate foes or allow disparate groups of entities to work together as a diverse but cohesive unit.
Purple Road philosophies include ideas of manifest destiny and noblesse oblige, the idea that those with the strength and will to lead and rule should do so and that the weak or helpless should follow, the belief that strength comes from disparate elements working together seamlessly while maintaining their distinctiveness, despotism, the idea that charisma and will are the greatest sources of power, obedience to manifest authority, belief in the inherent potential of each individual and in the importance of emotion and emotional, familial and social ties and bonds, and respect for duty and responsibility. Purple philosophy has some similarities to areas of the White and Red Roads.
Purple wizards often walk the path of the tyrant, becoming despotic rulers, or slavers who extend their merchandise’s bondage to the will as well as the body, or arrogant enchanters who manipulate the emotions of others for their own pleasure. On the brighter side, many Purple mages are devoted commanders, leaders and generals or advisers and counselors who help people understand their relationships and realize their own potential. A few are summoners who delight in the company of beings from beyond their own world.
Things associated with Purple magic include amethyst, crowns, scepters and thrones.
