Meteos is a powerful, human Red Road wizard and a member of the order of assassins known as The Onphar Nine in my novel-in-progress “The Dawn Prism.” Not quite thirty, Meteos has spent his life embracing the rage, anger and impulsivity aspects of the Red Road, punctuated by periodic attempts to murder Zerieth, the wizard who killed Meteos’s foster-father and first magic teacher, Aigus. Aigus was a White Road mage and a member of the Order of the Open Hand; at the time Zerieth walked the Red Road and was a borderline sociopath who enjoyed exploring new ways to destroy bodies with his magic.
Meteos gained spiritual awareness and lost his parents both at a very young age. Shunned by the people of his village Aigus took him in, cared for him, and taught him to use his budding powers. Aigus groomed him to walk the White Road and join the Open Hand, but after Aigus’s death by Zerieth’s Red magic Meteos’s rage, his disillusionment with the powers and altruistic philosophy of the White Road led him to seek the seemingly greater power and more fulfilling views of the Red Road. In a manner simultaneously unconscious and intentional, he has become a man not to far removed in nature from the Zerieth he remembers and whose death he so desperately desires.
Though Zerieth now walks the White Road and seeks to atone for the atrocities of his past, Meteos sees only the man who rent his spirit. He lives only for revenge and amuses himself between attempts on Zerieth’s life by renting out his destructive skills as a mercenary, finally being inducted into the elite order of the Onphar Nine by the group’s current leader, the cruel Black Road wizard Xalacris. His first true mission with the Onphar presents him with a new opportunity for revenge, but far more is at stake than his vendetta with the man who is now the Hierophant of White…
Just as Zerieth was in his youth, Meteos is brash, impatient and driven by desire and impulse. However, unlike Zerieth Meteos’s time with Aigus has left him with the shell of a moral center; if nothing else, he will always come to the aid of a child in need.
